Decorah, Iowa - Dan Moser

July 14, 1926 - December 24, 2025

Daniel "Dan" Moser, age 99, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, at Wellington Place in Decorah, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at the Helms Funeral Home - Chekal Chapel, 201 Main Street, Fort Atkinson, Iowa. A prayer service with Deacon Jim Zajicek presiding will follow. Burial will be in the St. John's Cemetery in Fort Atkinson with full military rites.

Daniel Anthony Moser was born on July 14, 1926, the son of Henry and Catherine (Secora) Moser near Fort Atkinson, Iowa. Daniel was a lifelong member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church where he was baptized and received all the sacraments. Daniel attended St John's School and 3 years at Fort High School. He quit school to go to work for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railway Company. He worked in Fort for a short time. Later, he worked mostly on bridge maintenance in 5 states for almost 5 years.

After this, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force for 4 years from 1948 to 1952. He had basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He was then sent to March AFB, Denver, Colorado for 4-month armament school then to Orlando AFB, Florida. Then to Warner Robins AFB in Georgia. Then to Shaw AFB in Sumter, South Carolina. When the Korean war started, the whole unit was sent to Korea. Served under the 12th AF and the 14th AF while in the US. When they went to Korea, he served with the 5th AF far east in Korea. They went by troop train from Shaw AFB to California. Where they boarded the troopship, Gen R.L Howze at San Francisco to Pusan, Korea. While in Korea, they were in the 606 Aircraft control and warning - mobile radar. He served in Korea for 18 months (September 1950 to March 1952). Returned from Japan on troopship Gen. Edwin D. Patrick to San Fransico. He was discharged from Perron AFB in Sharmon, Texas. While in the service and after being discharged he received the Korean Service Ribbon with 4 Bronze Service Stars - US Distinguished Unit Citation - Good Conduct Medal U.N. Service Medal and the Korean Medal. After he was discharged, he went back to work on the railroad for 3 more years.

On January 17, 1953, Daniel married Mary Rose Reicks at St. John's Church in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. They had 3 children, David Paul, Susan Kay, and Sandra Mae. In 1955, he started work in the Fort Creamery to make cheese - when they closed, they moved to Calmar where they made cheese - when they closed - they moved to Decorah. He was a cheese maker for 33 years and retired in 1988. When he was young, he enjoyed hunting and trapping, also fishing. After retiring, he spent many hours at Lake Meyer and the Turkey River.

Daniel is survived by one Daughter, Susan (Mike) Stammeyer, one Son David Moser and one Son-in-law Charles Nelson. Three Grandchildren, Jeremy (Ramona) Stammeyer, Jessica (Travis) Lennon and Sara Nelson. Also, eight Great Grandchildren and many Nieces and Nephews.

Daniel was preceded in death by his Parents Henry and Catherine (Secora) Moser, his Wife Mary and his Daughter Sandra. Also, his Siblings Vivian (Art) Huber, Raymond (Chris) Moser, Mildred (Bart) Hemesath and Arthur Moser. Brother-in-laws: Art Huber, Bart Hemesath, William, Ervin, Melvin, and Clarence Reicks. One Sister-in-law Eleanor (Reicks) Kirby, Father and Mother-in-law Clement and Hannah (Drilling) Reicks.

Daniel was a member of the Fort Legion Post since his discharge.
